Blue Cure founder Gabe Canales has lived with prostate cancer for 15 years — with no progression.
He often asks himself:
Did drastic lifestyle changes make a difference?
He wants to believe they did — even though there’s no way to know for sure whether those changes slowed his cancer.
But what if he hadn’t made them?
What if he had continued living with a highly inflammatory diet and poor lifestyle habits?
Would his cancer have progressed?
Would he now be battling heart disease, diabetes, or stroke — like other men in his family?
In this clip, Gabe speaks with Dr. Scott Eggener, Vice Chair of Urology at UChicago Medicine, and asks whether lifestyle may have influenced the course of his prostate cancer. Dr. Eggener acknowledges it absolutely could have — while clarifying that there's no definitive proof. That uncertainty is something many men on active surveillance wrestle with: there may not be certainty, but there is power in taking ownership of one’s health.
Since his diagnosis, research has continued to support elements of the approach Gabe chose — originally guided by Dr. Aaron Katz, and later reinforced by Dr. Dean Ornish and the late Dr. John Mendelsohn of MD Anderson, who introduced him to Dr. Lorenzo Cohen, Director of Integrative Medicine.
These experts helped shape Gabe’s belief that while he couldn’t control the diagnosis, he could influence the direction of his health.
