Through a series of intimate, searching verses, the speaker calls on the moon to recount what it saw on Ashura: the radiance of Imam Hussain, the martyrdom of Ali Akbar, Qasim, and the young companions, and the transformative moment when Hur ibn Yazid al-Riyahi turned away from falsehood and toward his Imam.
The elegy moves between awe and grief, between longing and self-reckoning until it arrives at the question that cuts deepest of all: Would I have stood with them?
Inspired by Sibte Jaffer's "Ay chand", "O Crescent of Karbala" makes the tragedy of Karbala immediate and personal, bringing the listener not only into history but into accountability as well.
[LYRICS]
O crescent, of Karbala
Please recount for me, all you that saw
Show me the glory, of which I've heard
Show me the face of Hussain, tell me his every word
What did you find, when you saw my Imam
Did his face shine, as he saved Islam
And were his shoulders high, when Ali Akbar stood
How many tears did he cry, knowing all he would
When you saw Qasim, did you see Hasan
When you saw On and Muhammad, tasting martyrdom
They were just children, in the battlefield
Did Hussain run to each one, as he was killed
Did you see Hur, pacing through the night
Did his face change, as he choose his side
Hur was set free, tell me one more thing
How many praises of Hur, did Hussain then sing
Often I wish, I could have been there
In between arrows, and Hussain and his prayer
72 soldiers, that you witnessed then
Tell me O crescent, would I have stood with them
