I used HP Regen effects to counter the HP poison but from the clear screen I think the HP Poison does not contribute to HP lost. I ended the fight with zero HP lost for the mission even though I'm not really at full HP.
If this is true then you can make do without Penelo call.

I had U2 crystal equipped. No passives were removed from anyone.
