Durante la ocupación musulmana de Gerona (717) parece que la antigua iglesia tuvo funciones catedralicias, ya que la catedral había sido convertida en mezquita.​ Después de la conquista franca, hacia el final del siglo viii, alojó una comunidad de presbíteros dependiente de la catedral, a la que quedaría fuertemente ligada desde entonces.

Como se encontraba fuera de la muralla, fue objeto de varias fortificaciones y se observan estilos arquitectónicos diferentes. De la antigua iglesia románica se conserva la planta y el alzado de la cabecera (siglos xii-xiii), ya que el resto de la estructura es obra gótica levantada a partir del siglo xiv y alcanza su máxima esplendor en el siglo xvi. En el año 1835, sin embargo, se convirtió en una simple parroquia.​

El 31 de mayo de 2011, el papa Benedicto XVI le otorgó el título de basílica menor​ a instancias del obispo de Gerona, Francisco Pardo, siendo la segunda en poseerlo en la comarca, después de la iglesia de Santa María de Ampurias.
Durante las últimas obras de restauración, llevadas a cabo a finales del siglo xx, se puso de manifiesto la policromía gótica de las bóvedas y los nervios de la nave central, que se habían tapado con cal durante el periodo barroco.


The church of San Félix is ​​a basilica located in the city of Gerona, originating from the early days of Christianity. It houses the services of the Parroquia Mayor de Sant Feliu of the Bishopric of Gerona, so called because this was the main temple of Gerona before the construction of the cathedral.
Its construction, in honor of the martyr Saint Félix, lasted from the 12th to the 17th century and conserves a large part of the Romanesque building, later completed with the Gothic naves and roofs and the Baroque façade.
The building originates next to a Roman road where it is believed that the martyrium, or Paleo-Christian church, was built in honor of the martyr Saint Félix.
During the Muslim occupation of Gerona (717) it seems that the old church had cathedral functions, since the cathedral had been converted into a mosque. After the Frankish conquest, towards the end of the 8th century, it housed a community of priests dependent on the cathedral, to which it would remain strongly linked ever since.

As it was outside the wall, it was the object of several fortifications and different architectural styles are observed. Of the old Romanesque church, the floor plan and elevation of the head (12th-13th centuries) are preserved, since the rest of the structure is Gothic work built from the 14th century and reached its maximum splendor in the 16th century. In the year 1835, however, it became a simple parish.

On May 31, 2011, Pope Benedict XVI granted it the title of minor basilica at the request of the Bishop of Gerona, Francisco Pardo, being the second to possess it in the region, after the church of Santa María de Ampurias.
During the last restoration works, carried out at the end of the 20th century, the Gothic polychromy of the vaults and the ribs of the central nave, which had been covered with lime during the Baroque period, was revealed.
