According to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, 38 Burundian refugees will voluntarily return to their home country on July 5, 2023, after expressing interest in doing so and learning that Burundi is a peaceful and secure place to do so.
This is the first caravan to leave Malawi in a while. The governments of Malawi and Burundi have been cooperating with the UNHCR to facilitate the process of voluntary repatriation.
In the Dzaleak camp, returned refugees have been residing for years. According to the UNHCR, as of May, Malawi was housing more than 50,600 refugees and asylum seekers, including more than 32,000 people from the Congo, almost 11,000 from Burundi, and more than 6,000 from Rwanda.
