From garbage dump to power plant: Shanghai builds world's largest food waste-to-energy hub

Описание: Recently, the third phase of Shanghai's Laogang Bioenergy Reuse Project has entered commissioning, boosting daily food waste treatment capacity by 2,000 tons.

With the addition of the third phase, the total daily processing capacity of the facility has risen to 4,500 tons, making it the world's largest deep resource utilization base for food waste.

Compared with the earlier phases, the third phase of the project has introduced multiple innovative processes while expanding its scale.

Several light-blue tanks are installed within the facility for biogas purification.

These units further refine the biogas generated from the anaerobic digestion of food waste into bio-natural gas, which serves as raw material for producing green methanol.

The bio-natural gas from the project is now fed into Shanghai's gas grid and powers the city's new 100,000-ton green methanol project.

While food waste is being efficiently utilized, resource recovery technology for dry waste is also making continuous breakthroughs.

Shanghai's pilot "mid-temperature recycling furnace" line at Laogang reduces fly ash by over 95%, extracts industrial salt, and is set to expand to all dry waste lines this year.

By the end of the 14th Five-Year Plan period, Shanghai had constructed 15 municipal solid waste incineration plants and 13 food waste resource recovery facilities, achieving a total end-of-pipe treatment capacity of 39,000 tons per day.

During the 15th Five-Year Plan period, Shanghai will continue to explore new pathways for waste resource recovery and promote technological upgrading and innovation.
