Prized by the Police and Military for their intelligence and willingness to learn and adapt to new roles, the German Shepherd is a self-assured working dog whose determined nature is valued greatly by its owners and handlers.
The breed’s loyalty means that as soon as they’re introduced to, and become part of a family, they’ll do anything they can to protect their new “pack”. You don’t need to train your German Shepherd to protect you and keep you safe, it’s an instinctive behavior that’s engrained in its genetic make-up.
It won’t hesitate to lay down its life to defend you and your family from any perceived threats and harm, and whether the danger the Shepherd senses is real or not, it’ll react immediately.
Originally bred to be herding dogs, the German Shepherd’s instinct to protect its family can be traced back to the formative years of the breed, when they were purposely created to be better at handling, commanding, and protecting large flocks of sheep.
For modern Shepherds, their family becomes their pack, and their innate need to protect those in their charge takes command in almost every social situation. They’ll take charge and willingly step into harm's way if they think the safety of their pack is being threatened in any way.
Like all herding and working dogs, German Shepherds are naturally intelligent and ranked by Stanley Coren as being the second most intelligent breed in the world. Coupled with the breed’s desire to learn and have some sort of defined role, their intelligence makes them ideal for police and military work.
As well as being curious and friendly, the Shepherd is noted for its fierce loyalty to those it’s closest to, and this devotion further fuels their protective instinct.
German Shepherds are also territorial, meaning this protective nature extends to your home.
In reality, the Shepherd is a fun-loving, affectionate dog who enjoys nothing more than spending time with its pack. It is however important to acknowledge and accept the breed’s slightly less positive behavioral traits, so that you can help them to control these instincts.
The notion that GSDs are dangerous dogs is a myth - German Shepherds aren’t any more dangerous than any other breed of dog. In fact, they’re ranked as the thirty-eighth most dangerous breed in the world, meaning there are thirty-seven other breeds more likely to bite you than a German Shepherd is.
Ill-educated and uninformed “opinion” has helped to perpetuate the myth that German Shepherd’s are unduly dangerous when that simply isn’t true.
There are a number of default defensive behaviors that your GSD will engage in before even thinking about using its teeth. This could include barking, baring their teeth and growling, and you may also notice the hair on the back of the dog’s neck and between the shoulder blades standing up.
While you’ll never need to feel intimidated or scared in your Shepherd’s company, you’ll sometimes need to rein in its protective instincts through proper training and socialization.
