While it may be wise to let the initial market excitement around AI settle before building long-lasting institutions and regulations, a few things about the future of AI are already becoming predictable.
First, bringing demand into the discussion helps us better understand the likely balance between automation and human–AI collaboration. AI will not replace humans everywhere overnight; the equilibrium will depend on what users and institutions actually demand.
Second, the tasks most likely to be replaced are those that are boring, dangerous, or extremely expensive. In many cases, that replacement is a positive development for society.
Third, because humans are far more diverse than AI systems and much slower to change learning and behavior, it is often cheaper for AI systems to adapt to humans rather than forcing humans to adapt to AI. This suggests a future where AI tools increasingly adjust to human preferences, habits, and institutions.
Finally, when discussing policies such as universal basic income, we should remember the lessons of globalization and the Rust Belt. People need meaningful work and meaningful income, not just passive financial support, in order to truly thrive.
Understanding these dynamics helps us think more clearly about the economic and social institutions that will shape the AI age.
