(TW: Body image) This is unacceptable in 2022. This has been on my mind for the last few days and I’m still so angry about it. There’s too much to unpack in a short video but, let’s try.
Not only does the title of this article promote a dangerous and harmful message that women’s bodies and certain body types are STILL seen as a fashion trend, a throwaway aesthetic and an ephemeral look to aspire to become, but it’s also fatphobic and glamourises addiction as “chic” - all within one line of copy, whew.
To this day, weight is still being weaponised as marketing tools for people to feel better/worse about themselves - and this is another example of a publication devaluing women by marking bodies against numerical values to be judged on.
I understand one person’s trauma is not another’s direct responsibility to cater towards - but it seems a clickbait title where shock value garnering more clicks and a wave of (negative) mass media attention holds more gravitas than responsible journalism. Granted, the article tries to present a balanced view of the opposing sides – but only once the reader opts in to clickthrough sifting through opening paragraphs praising “tiny forms” and “waifish girls” first.
It’s 2022. We’ve come a long way since the days of beauty magazines promoting thigh gaps, “clean” eating and stick thin body types as the only form to be celebrating. I was that girl then and a different woman now. But even so, I still hear people around me agonising over their bodies, telling me the meals they’re skipping or the additional exercise they’re adding to their days to justify their eating.
Let’s consider the impact our words collectively has and the action it generates.
