President Bola Tinubu and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz spoke on Wednesday about strengthening security, power, and infrastructure ties, including reviving the stalled Siemens electricity project and Nigeria's purchasing used German helicopters for reconnaissance. Merz also committed to revisiting the 2019 Siemens deal, targeting 11,000MW by 2023, while Tinubu referenced the accelerated performance agreement signed at COP28 in December 2023.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian Air Force showcased its A-29 Super Tucano aircrafts, marking a new era of precision air operations after a decade-long acquisition process, concluding in 2021 following US policy changes.
In security developments, 117 repentant terrorists from Borno State completed the Disarmament, Rehabilitation and Reintegration (DRR) programme at Mallam Sidi Camp, with plans to expand to the North West. Officials stressed rehabilitation prevents the recycling of violence, while Benue State requested a DRR camp.
With under 24 hours to FCT council elections, two PDP candidates - Julius Adamu (Bwari) and Zadna Dantani (AMAC) stepped down, citing “fatherly advice” from FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, raising concerns over opposition participation. Opposition figures Peter Obi, Atiku Abubakar, Solomon Dalung, and Dino Melaye supported final-day campaigns, with Melaye saying winning AMAC symbolically meant conquering Nigeria. Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo criticised journalists and activists for projecting personal views as representative of all Nigerians after the Electoral Act 2026 signing.
In Osun State, Governor Ademola Adeleke trended online after a rally in Osogbo with the “Osun State Cooperative Movement,” repeatedly professing his love for residents and urging voters to resist election rigging, criticising the state APC for being “anti-people.”
Under milestones, Senator Florence Ita-Giwa, “Mama Bakassi,” celebrated her 80th birthday. Born in Cross River State to a traditional ruler father and pioneering journalist mother, she credited her mother for inspiring her political career. Ita-Giwa served as Senator for Cross River South (1999–2003) and Special Adviser to President Olusegun Obasanjo on National Assembly matters, with Obasanjo attending her birthday.
Similarly, Chief Anyim Pius Anyim, first elected Senator at 37 for Ebonyi South under the United Nigeria Congress Party, was unanimously elected President of the 4th Senate in 2000, passing 65 bills and 72 resolutions. By 2011, he became the first non-career civil servant appointed Secretary to the Government of the Federation by President Goodluck Jonathan. President Tinubu praised his political longevity and bridge-building across parties.
