Professor Richard Scheltema, Chair of Structural Proteomics, and Dr Andy Chetwynd, Tenure Track Fellow at the University of Liverpool's Centre for Proteome Research, discuss their groundbreaking work in clinical proteomics and paediatric kidney disease research.
The team uses advanced mass spectrometry techniques and Promega Trypsin Gold and Lys-C proteases to analyse blood products, urine, and other biological samples with high efficiency and rapid digestion.
The efficiency of these proteases was instrumental in helping them achieve LEAF Gold certification, making their laboratory more environmentally friendly through reduced material usage and shorter digestion times
Their research focuses on understanding molecular changes in human ageing, identifying biomarkers, and developing treatments to help children avoid dialysis or get off dialysis quicker.
The Centre for Proteome Research, co-run with Professor Claire Eyers, combines structural proteomics with medical applications, studying protein structures and age-related molecular targets in lung tissue.
This research aims to improve outcomes for paediatric kidney disease patients, allowing children to return to school and maintain better social lives whilst advancing understanding of human health and ageing.
