Описание: The shoreline in Mary Cassatt's The Boating Party affects the movement of space in the painting. The shoreline is not painted as a background object in the far distance as we'd normally expect. Instead, she pulls it closer. This is similar to a technique we see in Hiroshige.

We talked a bit about her use of pictorial space in relation to the figures in some negative space, but we haven't talked about this very important aspect of her work. We can think about the idea of painting what we see, or creating the story that we want to tell in our painting.
