In this video, we make some PdI2 which will be further used in some upcoming videos.
First, we dissolved some Pd foil in HNO3 again and neutralized it using KOH. To this, we added NaI to precipitate the black-brown PdI2. After the video, it was washed with Heptane to ensure any Iodine which might have formed from excess HNO3 is gone which is why the solution appears much brighter in the upcoming videos.
PdI2 is quite useful as the Iodide readily dissolves in many coordinating compounds such as Iodide or Cyanide. While the concentration of Pd is very little it would be hard to get off the Nitrate or Nitric acid here and Nitrates disturb for example the formation of the yellow Dimethylglyoxime complex. So going via the voluminous PdI2 we have a good way to clean even small amounts of Pd.
