It is one of the few remaining wooden mosques in West Sumatra, a precious example of Minangkabau architecture, with its pointed roofs rising toward the sky like elegantly carved horns. Founded in the late 19th century, this ancient prayer hall retains its original spirit: simple materials, harmonious lines, and an aura of spirituality that seems to have settled into the wood itself. Buya Hamka, an influential Indonesian Islamic scholar, writer, and public figure, studied the Quran here as a child, a detail that makes the place not only sacred but also deeply rooted in the country's cultural history.
The atmosphere inside is intense and intimate: a respectful silence envelops every corner, interrupted only by the rustling of the palm trees surrounding the building. Although the old prayer hall is no longer used for the five daily prayers, replaced by a new mosque built next door, it continues to be a vibrant center of religious learning, a testament to a tradition that introduces children to the faith from a very young age and has been passed down unchanged for generations.
To the side of the building, a large pond teeming with fish adds a touch of serenity to the landscape, while in the forecourt stands an ancient ceremonial drum, enclosed in a structure that recalls the pagoda's architecture. Chiseled and decorated with brightly colored geometric and floral motifs, it once served to warn of danger, announce important events, or call the faithful to prayer. Today, it is a carefully guarded object, maintained in perfect working order as a symbol of a cultural and religious heritage that lives on, proud and silent, in the heart of the community.
