Every photograph has the potential to tell a story. Most do not, and the gap between the two is almost never the camera.

This is the introduction to The Composition of Hospitality, a four-part series on how photographs are put together, and on why the decision you make in the half-second before the shutter determines whether anything you shot that day was worth the day.

This is new material. It is not in my book, The Image of Hospitality, and it does not repeat anything in it. The book was about the making of hotel photographs: what happens on the day, who is in the room, what gets decided and by whom. This series goes closer in, to the arrangement inside the frame itself. If you have read the book, this extends it. If you have not, the series stands on its own.

Composition is probably the most misunderstood element of photography. It gets taught as a set of rules, and rules are the least useful form the subject can take. A rule tells you where to put something. It does not tell you why, and it does not tell you what to do when the room will not cooperate. What follows is not a list of rules. It is a set of instruments.

In this introduction: what the series covers, why composition is the skill the technology has not replaced, and the one condition that makes photographing hospitality different from photographing anything else. The arrangement is already there. Somebody designed it, and they designed it to be looked at by people, before any camera arrived.
