Hello everyone, I am Dr. Raghaendra Kosski, Consultant Microsurgical Andrologist, Urologist, and Sexual Medicine Specialist at Apollo Hospitals, Jubilee Hills, Hyderabad. Phimosis is a common condition where the foreskin cannot be easily retracted over the head (glans) of the penis. It is normal in children up to about 4-5 years due to adhesions that naturally resolve, but persistent tightness beyond this age is pathological phimosis. It is common in individuals with diabetes due to recurrent fungal infections (balanoposthitis) and can also arise from trauma or chronic inflammation such as Balanitis Xerotica Obliterans (BXO). Diagnosis is clinical, based on the inability to retract the foreskin, which can range from mild difficulty to complete inability. Phimosis can cause discomfort, pain during intercourse, recurrent urinary tract infections, and poor hygiene due to smegma buildup, potentially leading to complications like penile cancer. Treatment is often needed and includes conventional circumcision (sleeve technique), stapler circumcision, or laser circumcision—with stapler circumcision offering better cosmetic results and faster recovery. Patients experiencing symptoms should consult an andrologist or urologist for proper evaluation and treatment options.___________________________________________________________________________________
