Описание: I plan to discuss the challenges of navigating the industry of cybersecurity which currently suffers from a lack of diversity and how to overcome some of those challenges through promoting diversity in the field. Having the confidence to ask questions and learn new technical skills is crucial to success in cybersecurity, but feelings of inadequacy due to a false sense of unrealistically high expectations impede this. The students of diverse genders and ethnicities with who I interact surprise me with their lack of confidence when applying for scholarships, internships, or jobs. Students I would consider shoe-ins for a certain position, limit themselves by avoiding opportunities they feel unqualified for. The most effective way to battle that self-doubt is through experience and networking. When students interact with others in the field of cybersecurity, they simultaneously gain knowledge of the discipline while having a more realistic view of the skills and abilities required to work in this field. Cybersecurity is a quickly growing field that is becoming ubiquitous as technology permeates all facets of life. Diversity in the ranks of workers breeds innovation and it is a necessity to fill all the positions in cybersecurity now and in the future. To achieve this, it is imperative that public institutions systematically do outreach and provide opportunities for meaningful connections between diverse populations and cybersecurity students and professionals. My name is Arcadio Vielma, but I go by Arcky, and I am a Father, Husband, Veteran, and MBA Cybersecurity Focused graduate with five years of experience within cybersecurity. I graduated from California State University San Bernardino in 2018 with a Bachelor of Science in Information Systems and Technology - Cybersecurity Intelligence. I will be graduating this May with my master’s degree. While in my MBA program, I was selected for the National Science Foundation Cybercorps Scholarship for Service and became an MBA Student Ambassador. Additionally, I was nominated as the President of the Cyber Intelligence and Security Organization (CISO), cybersecurity club at CSUSB for the 2020/21 academic year. Also, during my time, I have earned the CSUSB Gold Level President’s Volunteer Service Award, MISSA’s 25th annual Information Technology Competition 1st place award, and four cybersecurity industry-recognized certifications. I am proud to have been the creator of the CISO Cyber Mentorship Program and for my volunteer service with the Cybersecurity Center in helping to teach over a thousand girl scouts over the years ranging from middle to high school about cybersecurity.
