One soldier. One machine gun. 200 lives on the line.
On November 1, 1950, during one of the most devastating surprise attacks of the Korean War, Private First Class Richard Leyba made a decision that saved his unit and cost him everything.
The 8th Cavalry Regiment was surrounded near Unsan, North Korea. 20,000 Chinese soldiers had moved through the darkness without warning. The only escape route was a single narrow track and it was closing fast.
Leyba didn't wait for orders.
This is the story of a 19 year-old soldier who held the line alone so that others could walk out alive. Awarded the Distinguished Service Cross posthumously, his name is rarely mentioned in history books. It should be.
