Question 1: There are two cuboidal boxes as shown in the adjoining figure. Which box requires the lesser amount of material to make?
Solution:(a) For Cuboid:
l = 60 cm
b = 40 cm
h = 50 cm
Total Surface Area (TSA) = 2(lb+bh+hl)
= 2(60X40+ 40 X50+ 50X60)
=2(2400+2000+3000)
= 2X7400 = 12800 sq.cm
(b)For Cube:

Side a = 50 cm
TSA = 6XaXa
= 6X50X50 = 6 X2500
= 15000 Sq.cm
Therefore, Cuboid (a) requires lesser material

Question 2: A suitcase with measures 80 cm × 48 cm × 24 cm is to be covered with a tarpaulin cloth. How many metres of tarpaulin of width 96 cm is required to cover 100 such suitcases?
Solution: For suitcase: l = 80 cm
b= 48 cm
h = 24 cm
TSA =2(lb+bh+hl)
= 2(80X48+48X24+24X80)
=2(3840+1152+1920)
= 2X6912 = 13824 sq. cm
Area required for 100 suitcases = 100 X13824 sq. cm
Let length of tarpaulin cloth be l1 = 96 cm
Breadth b1 = ?
Area of cloth = Area of 100 suitcases
96 Xb1 = 100X13824
b1 =(100X13824)/96
b1 = 144X100cm
b1 = (144X100)/100 = 144 m
Therefore 144m of cloth is required.
