College rankings usually obsess over the best schools.
Today, we’re doing the opposite—an objective, data-driven (and slightly brutal) 50-state road trip to find the statistically “worst” college in every U.S. state.
Our criteria is simple and consistent: the trifecta of terror
low graduation rates + high student debt + weak post-grad earnings.
This isn’t a hate video, and it’s not about mocking students. In many cases, these schools serve working adults, first-gen students, and people trying to escape poverty. The point is to explain the risk—and how the numbers can quietly trap students in debt without delivering the degree or salary they were promised.
In this breakdown, we use widely reported outcome metrics (like graduation/completion rates, typical debt, loan default rates, and median earnings after attendance) to answer:
Which college in each state has the worst overall outcomes?
Why do some schools accept almost everyone… but graduate almost no one?
Where does “bad ROI” come from—price, low completion, or low pay?
What are the warning signs to spot before you enroll?
What safer alternatives exist (community college, transfer paths, in-state publics, targeted programs)?
⚠️ Important: “Worst” here means worst outcomes by the metrics, not “worst people” or “no one succeeds.” Some students thrive anywhere—but the odds matter.
If you’re a student, parent, or just curious about the real economics of college in America, this is the state-by-state guide you wish existed before signing a loan.
