The Philippine government called an urgent meeting on Wednesday to discuss how to solve the country's mounting waste problem after a mountain of garbage collapsed onto squatters, killing at least 124 people.

Rescuers continued to pull corpses from the stinking filth at the Payatas dump in Manila two days after the wall of garbage, softened by heavy rains, crashed onto the houses and burst into flames.

Village leaders at the Payatas dump site surveyed residents on Wednesday and estimated about 170 were still missing.

Col. Jaime Canatoy, in charge of about 300 soldiers searching for victims, said the military has been ordered to continue the search until all have been found.

Thirty-six of the 59 people pulled alive from the debris were taken to hospitals with injuries, and more than 800 people whose houses and shanties were destroyed or threatened were given shelter in nearby schools and churches.
