In this episode of More Georgia Backroads, we take you to Kolomoki Mounds State Park & Museum in southwest Georgia, one of the most significant prehistoric Native American sites in the Southeastern United States.
Dating back over 1,500 years, the Kolomoki Mounds were constructed by the Woodland Indians between 350 CE and 750 CE. This impressive ceremonial center includes seven ancient mounds, with the largest—a temple mound—rising over 50 feet tall. These earthworks were once at the heart of a thriving village and offer powerful insight into the advanced culture, engineering, and spiritual life of the region’s early inhabitants.
Inside the Kolomoki Museum, visitors can explore archaeological exhibits, view artifacts uncovered from the site, and walk through a burial mound that has been carefully preserved and displayed for public education and reflection.
Join us as we walk the sacred grounds, explore the museum’s educational displays, and uncover the incredible story of the Woodland culture that once flourished right here in Georgia. Whether you're a history buff, nature lover, or curious traveler, this hidden gem offers a moving journey into Georgia’s ancient past.
Original Air Date: November 21, 2005
