California Crime Spree Ends In Wild Police Shootout

San Jose, California — On January 17th, 2026, two suspects engaged in a crime spree that spanned from Sacramento to San Jose and involved multiple other jurisdictions. The suspects were initially unknown, but were later identified as 30-year-old Muhammed Hussein and 29-year-old Edward Macias. Investigators say the pair first stole a red Corvette from a dealership in Sacramento, then carried out a string of armed robberies, including a convenience store in San Mateo County and a liquor store on McKee Road in San Jose. The following day, two more robberies were reported, one in a neighboring city and another on Coleman Avenue in San Jose. On January 21, San Jose police tracked the stolen Corvette through automated license plate readers and briefly pursued it before finding it abandoned. Hours later, officers responded to an armed carjacking at a dealership on Capitol Expressway, where a suspect allegedly pointed a gun at an employee and stole a green Corvette. The department’s helicopter, Air3, followed the vehicle into Hollister, coordinating with the Hollister Police Department and the San Benito County Sheriff's Office as a slow-speed pursuit unfolded.

The pursuit escalated dramatically after the suspect exited the disabled vehicle in Hollister armed with a handgun, triggering two separate officer-involved shootings before he carjacked another vehicle and sped back toward San Jose. Multiple agencies joined the freeway chase as the suspect drove at high speeds, eventually crashing near Julian Street and Notre Dame Avenue. Police say the suspect immediately opened fire on a San Jose sergeant, striking his hand and fracturing his skull with a gunshot to the head. Despite his injuries, the sergeant returned fire as the suspect attempted to commandeer the patrol vehicle and then fled on foot toward occupied cars at the intersection. Additional officers fired as they believed the suspect continued shooting. The suspect was ultimately struck by gunfire and a responding patrol vehicle, which investigators later determined knocked the 9mm handgun with an extended magazine from his grasp. He was pronounced dead at the scene and later identified as Muhammed Hussein. The wounded sergeant was hospitalized, treated, and released. Within 24 hours, Edward Macias was arrested and charged with multiple robberies connected to the crime spree.
