Durians have earned a bad reputation the world over thanks to their unique odor. But that hasn’t stopped connoisseurs from burning a fortune to acquire these coveted fruits, especially the ones grown in Thailand’s Nonthaburi province near Bangkok. A durian of the Kan Yao variety from here sold for nearly $48,000 at an auction a few years back, making it to the Guinness records for the world’s most-expensive durian.
We travelled to the farmlands of Nonthaburi and met durian farmers to understand what makes the fruit so special and why they think it’s not overpriced.
