Описание: On 28th May 1937, the Golden Gate Bridge officially opened to vehicle traffic, marking the beginning of a new era in transportation and American civil engineering. The event came just one day after the festive Pedestrian Day, during which over 200,000 people walked the bridge. Now, with ribbon-cutting ceremonies completed and final inspections done, cars, trucks, and buses streamed across the 1.7-mile-long suspension span linking San Francisco with Marin County for the very first time.

This remarkable footage captures the formality and pride of the moment—decorated vehicles rolling across the span, uniformed officers directing traffic, and crowds gathering to witness a feat once believed impossible. The bridge had been designed by Chief Engineer Joseph Strauss, with structural contributions from Charles Alton Ellis, and its elegant Art Deco towers and signature International Orange colour were styled by architect Irving Morrow.

The Golden Gate Bridge was the longest suspension bridge in the world at its opening, boasting a central span of 4,200 feet. Its construction, begun in 1933 amid the hardships of the Great Depression, employed thousands and overcame powerful tides, deep waters, and gale-force winds. By May 1937, it stood not only as a transportation link but as a powerful national symbol of progress, determination, and modern American design.

The vehicle opening on 28th May transformed regional life and set a global standard for bridge design. It remains one of the most iconic civil engineering achievements of the 20th century.
