The expiration of New START has given the U.S. Air Force the option to strengthen its nuclear capabilities. Officials say they are ready to restore full nuclear capability across the entire Boeing B-52 Stratofortress fleet, some of which had been limited to conventional roles. In addition, intercontinental ballistic missiles could be returned to a MIRV configuration, allowing a single missile to carry multiple warheads and strike different targets. This would not increase the number of missiles, but would significantly boost overall destructive potential. Although no official order has been issued, the move highlights the U.S. military’s readiness to rapidly enhance its nuclear deterrent if required.
