Palermo Airport is the second busiest in Sicily after Catania's Fontanarossa Airport situated on the eastern side of the island. The third airport of Sicily with passenger air service is located just south of Trapani. Palermo Airport's user-friendly passenger terminal is rather conventional as a structure but has been modernised. The airport is also referred to as "Punta Raisi"
The airport handled over 5.7 million passengers in 2017 and close to 44 000 air movements (ca 120 / day) incl. non-scheduled flights. The airport handles predominantly domestic traffic with a share of 78 % while international passenger throughput amounted to 1.35 million in 2017. July and August were the busiest months and Jan/Feb the quietest. Over 30 airlines serve the airport either all year round or seasonally.
