This is my tribute for the upcoming Australian National Band Championships. "A London Overture" was both my first Philip Sparke piece, as well as my first Nationals test piece (in B Grade, 1990).
This performance by Fodens was a winning performance at the Europeans in the 1980s and sounds like a totally different piece to that performed on the contest stage in B Grade in Melbourne in 1990! Whilst there were two bands who were able to "manage" the piece (Strathfieldsaye and Melbourne Transit), it was way too hard for the section for that time period. But it had the effect of providing aspirations for B Grade bands to play more difficult works, and on that basis, it played a part in lifting the overall Australian B Grade level within a few years.
