Hair Ice along the Dungeness River – Frosty Walk with Skye

Описание: Numbed by the frigid temps and dodging muddy thawed spots on the service road and trails that follow along the Dungeness River at the Fish Hatchery, Diane and I took our time exploring the frosty foliage spotlit by the morning sun while Skye, our energetic Norwegian Elkhound tracked scents of critters through the woods. Then we came upon something we had never seen before – brilliantly white patches of long frosty hairs on fallen branches scatted on top of the leaves in the woods. Later, we learned that this is a type of rare fungus called Hair Ice.

Background:
One of our favorite places for hiking with Skye, our three-year-old Norwegian Elkhound is the Dungeness Fish Hatchery. The trails through the woods and along the river are beautiful, full of wildlife and sounds of nature with the soothing rush of the river nearby. This is a peaceful, mesmerizing place for connecting with nature. Every season offers an entirely different experience. Although it was heartbreaking to watch and hear the salmon trying desperately to jump over the metal fence designed to end their spawning journey so that their eggs can be harvested and artificially inseminated by humans, we understand that this is necessary to save the salmon from extinction.
