The Rapana Street Library is an open library located in the city of Varna, Bulgaria that is designed to provide access for readers to browse books, sit, read and even enjoy the work of local street artists.
The idea was conceived by a team of local architects and designers who noticed that many young people’s lives are almost entirely based around digital media and therefore the popularity of books among their generation is on the decline. The form of the street library was inspired by the shell of a sea snail, a common sight in Varna which is often referred to as “The Marine capital of Bulgaria”.
The design was created using the parametric design tools Rhinoceros 3D and Grasshopper, before being produced using a CNC machine from wooden sheets. In total, the street library was built using 240 wooden pieces and can hold 1500 books.
Owners of this wonderful creation are a young team of architects and designers (Yuzdzhan Turgaev, Boyan simeonov, Ibrim Asanov and Mariya Aleksieva). This will be an inspiration for people who really believe ‘reading makes a full man’ and they will try this idea in their areas too. If young generation embraces it as a new idea we can have a hope for better tomorrow.
