Stripping paint and varnish off indoor wooden stairs. I had multiple layers to remove and wanted to do it safely so I used my tried and true EZ Strip Paint & Varnish Stripper. It's skin safe, Low VOC and cleans up with just water making it easy to use. All the gunk removed is safe to go in my household garbage too!
Here's what I did:
Applied a thick even coating of paint & varnish stripper starting at the top and working my way down.
Then starting at the bottom slowing I rolled plastic onto the surface to cover treated surface. I had to be super careful not to slip!
I let the product dwell for about 4 hours. I have seen it take less time and much more time for paint or varnish to soften. It really depends on what kind coating you're removing, how old/thick it is, and the type of surface you are stripping it from, wood/metal/etc.
Scraped off softened coatings with a blade scraper. Then scrubbed off remaining material with a heavy duty scrub pad and warm water. Finish by wiping the stairs down well with a clean cloth and warm water.
I let the stairs air dry for 24 hours before lightly sanding surface. Then another wipe to remove any dust before staining stairs. You don't want to seal any moisture underneath your new stain or paint. Wood holds moisture!
I used a quick dry all in one poly urethane stain so I could make it up to my bedroom later that night! It made such a big difference and stoked to have completed another refinish project in my new home.
