TOURISMO - TOURism Innovative and Sustainable Management of flOws
Persistent challenges like overtourism continue to affect destinations and communities across the Mediterranean region. The TOURISMO project aims address these challenges by using innovative technologies to monitor and manage tourist flows. Ir-Ramla tal-Mixquqa (Golden Bay) is one of eight MED pilot sites chosen.
The Malta Regional Development and Dialogue Foundation (MRDDf) has just launched a 5-year visitor counting programme at Ramla-tal Mixquqa, which is collecting pedestrian and vehicular traffic visiting the beach , in collaboration with the Majjistral Nature and History Park . We are using GDPR compliant on-site technologies like people-counting CCTV, coupled with deep-learning algorithms, in order to understand visitor density, trajectories, behaviours and predictions during peak tourist season. We are also engaging with local stakeholders like local businesses, Mellieħa Local Council, ERA, Cleansing Department, and MTA in order to find solutions for improving tourist flows while informing NATURA 2000 management plans for the area.
Counting indicated in the live stream resets automatically at 7am each day!

This project is supported by the European Commission under the Interreg Euro-MED Programme; and is possible thanks to our close collaboration with the Majjistral History and Nature Park. www.majjistral.org
This project is also co-funded by the NGO Co-Financing Fund managed by the Malta Council for the Voluntary Sector (MCVS) supported by the Ministry for Inclusion and the Voluntary Sector (MIV).
“A reliable estimate of total tourist visitation numbers and patterns is an essential foundation for an economic and environmental assessment of tourism flows in protected areas.”

Foreground
Ir-Ramla tai-Mixquqa beach (Golden Bay) is the second most visited sandy beach of the Maltese islands, found within the Mellieħa locality boundary in the north-west of Malta. The entire bay and beach are scheduled as part of a much larger Special Area of Conservation, while the sandy beach, dunes and the valley are scheduled as an Area of Ecological Importance. The Bay has its own dedicated NATURA 200 management plan since 2015. The habitat types found around the bay are mostly expanses of boulder screes, clay slopes, garrigue, agricultural land and disturbed steppe, like at Majjistral Park and Ir-Ramla ta’ Ghajn Tuffieħa (Riviera Bay).
The beach also hosts the remnants of an embryonic shifting dune ecosystem, roughly 90 m. away from the sea, presently supporting some species The site supports a number of rare flora and fauna typical of such communities.
Sand dunes are a scarce habitat in the Maltese Islands and there are only five remaining complete sand dune ecosystems. A dense population of Arundo donax, found at the mouth of what was once a dry valley system with an intermittent stream to the beach, has been removed over the last three years. The dunes are highly vulnerable to disturbance, and have been cordoned off and slowly rehabilitated.
Much of this dune community is now showing great signs of recovery thanks to huge efforts by the Majjistral Nature and History Park, which is managing the bay, and is presently supporting some rare species typical of such communities. At the beach slope sides and dune foreshore one can find grasses like Thinopyrum junceum, large bushes of Euphorbia melitensis and lnula crithmoides, Crucianella rupestris, Limonium melitensis , Crithmum maritimum, Scolymus hispanicus, Medicago marina, Glaucium flavum, Pancratium maritimum, Mattiola tricuspidata, along with Tamarisk, Acacia and Agave on its slopes.
