After conducting a thorough study of The Mutapa Empire, the Portuguese devised a cunning plan. They had to convert the King into Christianity then seize control of the empire. They had previously employed a similar strategy with great success in the Congo. In the year 1560 CE, Goncalo da Silveira, a devout Catholic Jesuit hailing from Portugal, was assigned the task of persuading the Mutapa King to abandon his traditional beliefs and embrace Catholicism. Da Silveira's efforts were initially promising, but they ultimately fell short due to the intervention of the coastal priests.
These coastal priests, through their persuasive arguments, managed to convince the King that the arrival of the Portuguese and their religion would bring about the wrath of the Gods, resulting in the withdrawal of their divine power from anyone who embraced Christianity. Fearing the consequences of abandoning his ancestral beliefs, the King ultimately succumbed to their influence. Tragically, as a result, the Jesuit was betrayed and killed, leading to the expulsion of the Portuguese from the empire. This turn of events inadvertently played a role in preserving the traditional customs and heritage of the Mutapa Nation.
