When FIFA boss Gianni Infantino visited Mexico City over three years ago, Azteca Stadium owner Emilio Azcarraga Jean assured him that renovations for the 2026 World Cup would preserve the venue's iconic character.
Latin America's largest stadium is set to enhance spectator experience with more seats, video screens, new lighting, locker rooms, and a sound system featuring over 340 speakers, all while maintaining its historical essence.
Azteca Stadium, famous for hosting Pelé’s last World Cup win in 1970 and Maradona’s in 1986, will become the first stadium to host a World Cup opening match for a third time on June 11, 2026, staging a total of five games.
Before renovations, Azteca had a seating capacity of 83,000, which could increase to 87,000.
Sponsored by Banorte, the stadium aims to reopen in March with a friendly match between Mexico and Portugal, with efforts to complete it by February 28.
