India recently launched the Chenab Rail Bridge, now the highest railway arch bridge in the world. On June 6, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated this engineering marvel in the Reasi district of Jammu & Kashmir.
The bridge stands 359 meters above the Chenab River—taller than the Eiffel Tower—and spans 1,315 meters.
Built to endure extreme Himalayan conditions, it can resist wind speeds up to 266 km/h, earthquakes up to magnitude 8, and temperatures ranging from –20°C to +50°C. It also includes safety features like spherical bearings and expansion joints, contributing to its expected 120-year lifespan.
The bridge is part of the Udhampur–Srinagar–Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL), a major infrastructure project that includes 36 tunnels and 943 bridges over 272 km.
Along with the Chenab Bridge, PM Modi also inaugurated the Anji Khad Bridge, India’s first cable-stayed rail bridge, and flagged off Vande Bharat Express trains between Katra and Srinagar.
Experts and media praised the bridge as a landmark achievement in mountain railway engineering. Civil engineering professor Madhavi Latha G. of IISc Bengaluru spent 17 years working on the project—the scale of which “hits you when you see it in real.
Air travelers are now spotting and photographing the bridge during flights to Srinagar; pilots even make special announcements when passing over it.
In plain terms, the Chenab Bridge is a record-breaking, safe, and resilient structure that finally gives Kashmir year-round rail connectivity to mainland India. It not only cuts travel time but also supports economic growth, tourism, and strengthened integration.
