Amazon Data Center Sparks Anger in India: Residents Fear Pollution and Noise | RB15

Описание: Amazon’s massive data center project near Mumbai is facing opposition from residents concerned about pollution, noise, electricity demand and the loss of green space.

The planned 22-hectare data center campus in Thane, India, is part of Amazon Web Services’ reported $21 billion investment push to expand cloud and AI infrastructure across India by 2030. The six-building facility is expected to require around 422 megawatts of power and use 193 diesel generators.

Residents say the project could put additional pressure on local resources while offering limited employment benefits. More than 1,000 people living nearby say they were not consulted about the plans.

Amazon says the project complies with the law, will not use water for cooling, and will not draw electricity from the network serving nearby homes. The company also says it obtained permission to remove trees and that saplings were planted afterward.

The controversy highlights the growing tension between India’s ambitions to become a global AI and data center hub and communities concerned about the environmental impact of large-scale digital infrastructure.
