In this video, I show how to set up food delivery systems that promote calm, confident learning in horses. I begin by looking at a common problem of 'mugging' behaviour and why it is not a good idea to ignore it but to build better patterns using clearer set ups.

Begin by clicking when the horse is relaxed and eating hay.
Work in protected contact with a fence between you, this gives the horse better information (stand there I'll come to you with the food).
Use a high rate of reinforcement (and big handfuls of food if needed) to avoid the unwanted behaviour.
Using an extinction process (not reinforcing previously reinforced behaviours) creates tension and frustration. Much better for the horse and your relationship to improve your training set up!

This helps horses understand what earns reinforcement, reducing frustration before it starts, and aligns with modern welfare-focused training.
