High on a rocky ledge grows the edelweiss flower that is a symbol of love. Moondog wrote a song about the brave people climbing to get it and how they would likely die in pursuit, but at their death at least they would find others willing to risk it all for the chance at love and ultimately be found as one. This scene represents that idea, they were both willing to sacrifice everything for the chance to feel. In this moment they realize they have found it, and even though they will likely be executed, in THIS moment they are so deliriously happy that they had the chance to find each other at all.
