In this Voices of History Scranton short film, Glynis Johns, founder and CEO of the Black Scranton Project, reflects on returning home after graduate school and transforming her research on Scranton’s Black history into a thriving community institution. She shares how an eight-week pop-up exhibit drew more than 1,200 visitors, how Black Scranton became a nonprofit during its first Juneteenth celebration, and how she secured a historic former bank building that now houses the Center for Arts and Culture. Glynis also speaks about the influence of her father, the perseverance that shaped her work, and the personal story behind the tattoo she carries in his memory.
Part of PA Humanities’ statewide Voices of History initiative amplifying the lived experiences of Black Pennsylvanians, this story was created in partnership with the Black Scranton Project, produced by Morgan Moody with creative direction by Terrell Robinson. Voices of History Scranton is made possible by funding from the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development's PA Arts and Culture Recovery Program, the Pennsylvania Department of Education Job Training and Education Programs Grant, and the Scranton Area Community Foundation.
