Sexual selection explains much of human behavior.
By understanding this fundamental mechanism of evolutionary change we are able to understand many puzzling behaviors not just in animals but also in us.
Charles Darwin and Alfred Russell Wallace came up with the revolutionary mechanism that could explain the changing nature of species. They called this natural selection.
But Natural selection couldn’t account for everything and Darwin’s critics pointed this out. Why would the peacock, for instance, have such a large set of feathers if natural selection was true?
These feathers are not helpful and should reduce his likelihood of survival. And why does only the male peacock and not the female peahen have such elaborate ornaments?
To answer this seeming paradox Darwin extended the theory of natural selection by one key part: sexual selection within species.
Competition for mates within a species leads to changes. This explains the peacock's feathers and so many other behaviors in nature.
But can this tell us anything about human mating and evolutionary psychology?
We will take a look at sex differences in life expectancy, aggression, and infidelity in humans. Many apparently puzzling features of our behavior can be understood by thinking about evolutionary pressures through sexual selection between men and women.
