Welcome to Historical Humans Reads, where we take primary sources and bring them to your screen. I’m Colum Coleman and today we are reading from The Satyricon by Petronius. One of the most fully preserved Roman novels, The Satyricon provides a satirical portrait of the age of Nero. Interestingly, The Satyricon was written during the reign of Nero, the very Emperor whose high society it mocks by the man who was arguably responsible for overseeing those social conventions. Petronius was a courtier and Consul of Rome who would serve as Nero’s Arbiter of Elegance, the man who had final say on matters of social style and taste.
