Do you know about the oldest idol of Lord Vinayaka in Tamilnadu older than Pillayarpatti temple.

It was by sheer chance that a team of epigraphists, who were on a visit to the Yama Dhandeeswarar Temple at Alagramam village near Tindivanam as part of their study on archaeological structures, discovered the idol in the precincts of the temple. The idol was found buried near the sanctum sanctorum during renovation work which was under way at the temple. The workers who were not aware of the importance, removed the idol and placed it in the temple.
Epigraphist C. Veeraraghavan and his wife Mangayarkarasi, who have been studying archaeological structures across the State, examined the idol, and said the idol dated back to the 5th century A.D. “The inscription on the idol is unique and it could be the oldest idol of Ganapathy found in Tamil Nadu. The idol measures 75 cms in height and 40 cms in width. The inscription found at the base of the idol preceded the inscription found at Kudaivarai temple at Pillayarpatti in Sivaganga district,” Mr. Veeraraghavan opined .

The idol was shown with the right hand holding a stick and the left hand with a broken tusk and anklets on the legs. The inscriptions engraved at the base of the idol were in Tamil brahmi script to Vatteluttu and could be assigned to 4th to 6th century A.D, he said.

With the grace of God , I visited Thirupura sundhari ambal sametha Yama Dhandeeswarar temple at Alagramam .
Interesting points about the temple :-

It is considered that Ganga devi herself is present in the temple tank and Yama bathed here and got his curse cleansed out.
Square shaped Avudaiyar.
It is said that the breathing in/out of Nandhi is felt/heard by people during the pradhosha times. ( I could not stay for Pradosham and experience )
It is also said that a strange sound of somebody breathing out from inside water is heard inside the sanctum sanctorum. The priest confirms the news .
It is claimed that Amman Thirupura sundhara nayahi seems to appear differently on different days.
The unique Lakulisa image holding the club is also present before Tripurasundari sanctum. Another Lakulisa image holding the weapon is present in the southern corridor of the main sanctum
The Pillaiyar here is said to be the oldest in Tamil Nadu.
Chithra gupthan is also present in the praharam
Mahavishnu is present with Sridevi and boodevi


A jeeva samdhi of an unknown Siddhar is also present in the paraharam
Since Lord Shiva himself is present here as Kala Anugraha moorthy, it is said that this is a good place for Kala Sarba dhosha parihrams.
As in any ancient temple, here also there is no Navagraha shrine.
Visited by Maha Periyava more than 10 times signifies the importance of the
temple.
Sri Adhinath Jinalaya, the ancient Digambar Jain temple also exists in this village.

The temple is about 10 KMs from Kotteripattu junction on Tindivanam -Villupuram road . But due to over bridge construction , this route is closed and one has to take a circuitous route if nearly 20 Kms . The temple is also under renovation .
