Flathead is a 1975 Thiokol serving mainly advanced-oriented terrain in Sundance’s Back Mountain, which is a big reason for 90% of the lift line being steep, and therefore gets a lot less crowds than nearby Red’s and Wildwood lifts. Flathead runs faster than Red’s so that makes it more desirable to ride in some ways as an alternative to the latter. It also acts as an egress route from certain areas like Bishops Bowl. The lift has what looks to be an early-model enterprise drive terminal but with the drive exposed, making for a louder than usual noise. Tower 3 is an interesting depression tower with 2 sheave wheels below acting as a pincher probably because of the first flat span from the previous tower to there. Flathead is the only antiquated lift left that hasn’t been removed and replaced the last 15 or so years in a resort sporting mostly modern fixed grips with a detachable. Flathead’s days look to be numbered as Sundance’s second detachable quad, Electric Horseman Express looks to be serving the same terrain but in a different alignment starting further down from Wildwood and ending at Bearclaw Cabin. It’ll be built this summer so that’ll make this lift redundant so only time will tell when it’ll be on its way out.
