Employability is not what it once was. Over the last twenty years the rhetoric has shifted from skills to attributes, from advantage to achievement, from human capital to human development, from individual to social benefit. Nottingham reflects this with its claim to support students in becoming global citizens, to have 'impact' and to demonstrate 'potential'. However, there is disconnection between the views of different stakeholders (staff, students, employers) over such issues as responsibility and visibility. Should professional services deliver 'recruitability' and academic schools 'employability'? Is the place of 'learning for employability' within the mainstream curriculum or is it an optional extra? Based upon seventy interviews carried out in Nottingham and Ningbo, this session will explore the changing discourse around employability and will examine its relationship with university strategy, practice and opinion.

The seminar is based upon research carried out by Sarah Speight, Natasa Lakovic and Lucy Cooker with support from the University's Teaching and Learning Strategic Fund.
