On today’s episode of expensive yachts can still break down, I got a call for a 50ft Azimut up at Jewfish Key that needs to be towed back to the Sarasota Yacht Club. Boy was this ‘ol girl a heavy one with lots of water resistance. I was only making about 4.5kts running at 2500 RPM for most of this trip, so those poor 200hp Suzuki’s we’re earning their money for sure! Despite its size and weight, I was able to put it on a reverse hip tow when we got to the yacht club and carefully guide it into its slip without too much trouble. On our way to the yacht club, the captain texted me and asked how I planned on getting the yacht into its slip. My response? “Very carefully!” 🤣

AI-Generated Description:
This tow started like most of them do—with a phone call and the phrase, “Hey, we’re having a little trouble out here.” What they didn’t mention was that their “little trouble” involved a 50-foot Azimut luxury yacht that had lost propulsion and was now politely drifting near Jewfish Key, looking like the cover photo for a magazine titled Yachts That Cost More Than Your House.
When I pulled up, the scene was calm. Too calm. The water was glassy, the sky was clear, and this massive yacht was sitting there like, “Don’t worry, I’m just waiting for my ride.” And there I was—400 combined horsepower, twin outboards, and a can-do attitude. The captain looked at me, then at his yacht, then back at me. You could feel the unspoken, “You sure about this?”
But we don’t back down from a challenge around here. We specialize in the high-horsepower hustle, baby.
Hooked up and ready to roll, I started the long tow back to the Sarasota Yacht Club. And when I say “long,” I mean slow. We averaged about 4.5 knots—which is just enough speed for every pontoon boat in the tri-county area to pass us while blasting Jimmy Buffett and offering unsolicited opinions about my technique.
Along the way, I dodged wakeboarders, dealt with five separate boats that had absolutely no idea what “towing a vessel” means, and tried not to think about how much fuel I was burning with both throttles flirting with wide open. My engine gauges were basically just sweating.
And then came the grand finale: sliding this behemoth into a tight slip surrounded by million-dollar fiberglass and zero margin for error. The owner asked, “You’ve done this before, right?”
I said, “Once or twice. You ever thread a needle while towing a building? It’s kind of like that.”
Despite the odds, the wind, and the sheer ridiculousness of the situation, we nailed it. Smooth entry, no drama, no crunching sounds, and no angry dockmasters. Just another day in the life.
So if you’ve ever wondered whether you can tow a 50-foot yacht with a boat that usually deals with things half that size, the answer is yes—you can. Should you? That’s a whole other conversation.
Hit play, grab a snack, and enjoy this slow-motion tug-of-war between horsepower, hull size, and raw stubbornness.
