Winter Trip to KYIV | St Sophia Cathedral & Free Walking Tour in the Snow!

I woke up on the 10th floor of the Hotel Ukraine in Kyiv to find a winter wonderland outside the window, it had been snowing all night and it looked like the city had sunk beneath a thick blanket of mist and snow. Looking down at Independence Square (Maidan Nezalezhnosti) on a true Winter's day in December was amazing, it was full of ant-like figures scrambling around in the snow and cold - a true winter's shot of Kyiv and a scene that made me think that Christmas had come early!

Still, I had lots of ideas and things to do in Kyiv - I'd been planning the trip for a month or two and was ready to get out there and make it all happen!

After wrapping up in my thermal clothes and five layers I braved the icy conditions heading for a couple of free walking tours that would guide me around some of Kyiv's most spectacular buildings and neighbourhoods. These included the magnificent golden-domed St Sophia Cathedral and Bell Tower from the Kievan Rus era, the recently rebuilt St. Michael's Monastery and a fascinating walking tour that included stops at the Golden Gate, St. Andrew's Church and an observational platform overlook Kyiv's frigid skyline - a good number of landmarks and places I can tick off my list of things to do in Kyiv.

The final city tour took us to Kyiv Funicular station where we caught a ride down to Podil - a historic neighbourhood also referred to as Kyiv's Lower Town. This is the first time I had heard of Podil and I fell in love with it as soon as I arrived. The old buildings on the street, the lights and fairground attractions, not to mention the festive atmosphere with the snow and ice made it feel like Christmas - a brilliant way to wrap up another exciting day in the city of Kyiv.

What an excellent day in Ukraine! The city looks spectacular in the snow and although walking around in the Ukrainian winter can be a challenge it's definitely one that reaps its rewards. So much so that I'm looking forward to doing it all again tomorrow!
