In the Orthodox Church it is common practice to use a censer. The idea is that the incense from the censer will arise to heaven like our prayers. There is a hymn that goes " O Lord, I have cried out to you: hear me, O Lord. Lord, I have cried out to you, hear me; hearken to the voice of my prayer as I cry out to you, hear me , O Lord. Let my prayer rise as incense before you; the lifting up of my hands as an evening sacrifice."
