On December 14, the Church celebrates the extraordinary and miraculous life of Saint John of the Cross, the Mystical Doctor and reformer of Carmel. His life was marked by miracles that punctuated a journey of deep union with God: from heavenly visions in childhood to the phenomenon of "levitation" during prayer and the mystical grace of "transverberation" (a wound of divine love in the heart). Imprisoned and tortured by his own brothers in order, he composed his most sublime poems in his cell, transforming suffering into light. He taught the world that the true miraculous life occurs when the soul, purified in the "dark night," is set ablaze with divine love.
