Описание: After getting off trail for a cousin’s wedding, I return to my attempt to Halfway Thru Hike the North Country Trail. After 18 hours of traveling by foot, train, and bus, I arrive on the northern side of the Mackinaw Bridge to start hiking in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. After being warned how rugged and remote the UP is, and regaled with “worst ever” stories about the bugs, bears, and wolves, I’m intimidated and excited to start this stretch of trail from St. Ignace, Mich. to Tahquamenon State Park. After 400 miles of sand, I finally see some rocks. I’m thrilled to reach my beloved Lake Superior finally, and have a powerful reaction to hiking in what feels like a cathedral of huge maples that captures why I am out here trying to walk 2,400 miles in 6 months.
