In early March 1776, Continental forces facing severe shortages of gunpowder and ammunition sailed to Nassau in the Bahamas to seize British military stores. Although the element of surprise was lost, American forces captured two forts and secured artillery and other materials before returning to New England.
In this First Thursday Seminar, Professor Charles P. Neimeyer, former Director and Chief of Marine Corps History and author of numerous works on American military history, examines the 1776 Marine raid on Nassau—widely recognized as the first amphibious landing conducted by American forces and the first combat operation involving the Continental Marines and Navy.
This seminar is part of the National Maritime Historical Society’s ongoing First Thursday series.
